Six weeks ago, I began my journey as a volunteer at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou, Taiwan. I spent the first week getting acquainted with the hospital. I vividly recall stepping inside Chang Gung for the first time and feeling lost even as I stood in the front lobby as doctors, nurses, and patients rushed past me. My classmate Tonya and I spent our morning shifts working at front desks to help direct visitors. With the kind help of the volunteer “Ah-Ma’s”(阿媽), we were able to quickly acquaint ourselves with the different buildings and locations of specialty clinics.
During the afternoon shifts, we had the opportunity to either volunteer in the emergency room or playrooms inside the Children’s Hospital. Volunteering in the E.R. was exciting because I saw patients coming in with different injuries, and I was able to transport patients into different observation rooms. Every time I pushed a patient on a wheelchair or bed, I felt that I had a direct, though minute, role in the care of that patient.
Volunteering in playrooms was less stressful and allowed me to interact closely with pediatric patients, an experience that I enjoyed tremendously as I aspire to become a pediatrician. The smiles and laughter that the children brought in when they stepped inside the playroom were incredibly heartwarming; it certainly showed that a positive outlook can emerge from those who have endured much hardship. As I have pondered many times before, it is the resilience of such patients that I am further inspired to become a physician.
Being a volunteer at Chang Gung has undoubtedly reaffirmed my decision to become a physician, and I am so glad to have had so many interactions with patients. I was ecstatic when I was first told that I had received a grant from Washington University to intern at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan for the summer, and without a doubt, this experience has surpassed all of my expectations. I want to thank Chang Gung volunteer services for giving me the opportunity to examine the medical culture of Taiwan, and I hope to visit again in the future to relive past memories and to make more that will surely last a lifetime.
