Introduction to the Eight-Year Results of the da Vinci Surgical System in Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital
Ming-Huei Cheng, M.D., M.H.A.
Since the establishment of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, our goals have been to provide excellent patient service, teaching and research in addition to establishing high technological systems to combine medical care and technology, allowing us to reach international standards.

The da Vinci Surgical System was brought into Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in the year 2006; we were one of the pioneers in using this system in Taiwan. This robotic instrument allows surgeons to conquer the most difficult aspects of surgery that humans can not achieve. Achieving high success rates in complex surgery and at the same time allowing a few small incisions. The da Vinci System features a magnified 3D high-definition vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and rotate far greater than the human wrist. As a result, da Vinci enables your surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control.

As of the end of March 2013, 2719 da Vinci Surgical Systems have been installed worldwide. Up to 450000 surgical cases have been completed in the year 2012, that is a 25% increase compared to the year 2011, meaning that more and more hospitals, doctors and patients agree with the results achievable with this surgical system. Since the introduction of the da Vinci Surgical System into Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, we have successfully completed nearly 700 cases of surgery, including those in the field of urology, gynecology, general surgery, proctology, cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery and ear, nose and throat surgery. Its use in urology is particularly helpful especially with treating prostate cancer, radical prostatectomy surgery and also including cystectomy, partial nephrectomy and ureteral reconstruction surgery.

In Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, the use of the da Vinci Surgical System technology has dramatically improved the accuracy and flexibility of operations, providing patients more sophisticated, high-quality surgical treatment options. In particular, the development of minimally invasive surgery in urology, medical technology and hospital quality of care is comparable to those provided in the United States and Europe. Our ability to match international standards is confirmed by our patients and their families. Our goal is to continue to strive for excellence and continue expansion of this type of minimally invasive surgery in order to benefit our patients.
