Food and nutrition Elizabeth Rose Have you heard the saying "you are what you eat?" ell, it is true! Your body changes food, such as an apple or a piece of cheese, into nutrients. Then your body uses the nutrients for growth, healing, and many other things. Without the nutrients in food, you could not stay alive. The foods that you eat make up your diet. Your diet should be made up of foods that are high in nutrients. Today many people's diets include too much fat and sugar and not enough nutrients. Eating too much fat and sugar and cause heart disease and other health problems... |

Guidelines for preventive activities in
general practice The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
The recommendations in these guidelines are based on current evidence based
guidelines for preventive activities. Precedence has been given to those
that are most relevant to Australian general practice. Usually this means
that the recommendations are based on Australian guidelines such as those
endorsed by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC). In
cases where these are not available, or recent, other Australian sources
have been used such as the National Heart Foundation of Australia or
Canadian or US preventive guidelines. References to support these
recommendations are listed. However, particular references may relate to
only part of the recommendation (eg. only relating to one of the high risk
groups listed) and other references in the section may have been considered
in formulating the overall recommendation. |

Surgical management of congestive heart
failure James C. Fang、 Gregory S. Couper Surgical therapy for advanced heart failure has been traditionally limited to cardiac transplantation. Historically, other surgical interventions on the failing heart have been limited by significant perioperative morbidity and mortality and a lack of evidence that such surgical interventions improved long-term outcomes. Moreover, Cardiac transplantation is limited by the lack of donor organs and advances in medical management have primarily only slowed disease progression. However, recent improvements in surgical techniques and rapid advances in device technology can now produce predictable benefits and acceptable mortality for these very ill patients. |

Handbook of gastroenterology William L. Hasler、 John M. Inadomi、 Tadataka Yamada The practice of gastroenterology has evolved dramatically during the past three decades. The science of the alimentary canal has advanced rapidly, and new diagnostic and therapeutic techniques have been added to our clinical methods, almost daily. Recognizing the need to advance current teaching materials for gastroenterology incorporating this new knowledge, we undertook editing of the Handbook of Gastroenterology. The success of the past four editions of the Textbook of Gastroenterology attested to the demand for information on the modern practice of gastroenterology. |

Neuroprotective agents William Slikker、 Russell J. Andrews、 Bruce Trembly This volume contains papers, abstracts and questions/answers from the Seventh International Conference on Neuroprotective Agents held in Pacific Grove, California, November 14-19, 2004. It has been the aim of these conferences to bring together clinicians, regulators, and basic science researchers from many disciplines and many parts of the world in a congenial and informal setting. The clinical focus of this seventh conference centered on the proposed medchanistic pathways to produce neuroprotection, the need to understand the developmental stage of susceptibility and prevention of neurotoxicity, and the need for combinational and time-course application of multiple therapies. |

Modern neurosurgery:clinical
translation of neuroscience advances Dennis A. Turner Focusing on how increased understanding of brain function affects clinical neuroscience, Modern Neurosurgery: Clinical Translation of Neuroscience Advances explores the interface between neuroscience advances and clinical neuroscience advances by examining the hypotheses that drive this evolution. The author reviews the relevant underpinnings of new neurosurgical techniques, treatments, and conceptual approaches, which are likely to shape clinical neuroscience over the next decade. A critical aspect of this rational approach is to underscore what needs to be done in each field, potentially leading to further study and improvements. |

Neuroendovascular surgery Michael B. Horowitz、Elad I. Levy Over the past decades many surgical subspecialties have moved from traditionally open procedures towards minimally invasive approaches. With the advent of improved technology and smaller more maneuverable devices more delicate procedures have been developed. In this volume the most common neuroendovascular procedures currently practiced are discussed. Topics include management of intracranial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, tumors, intracranial and extracranial arterial stenoses, and arterial fistulas. This publication provides neurosurgeons, radiologists, neurologists, and trial lawyers with a concise reference that explains the background, as well as indications, and techniques for performing the most common neuroendovascular procedures. |

Movement disorder surgery A.M. Lozano、 L.D. Lunsford Although there have been advances in medical therapy, a large number of patients with Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders continue to be faced with significant motor disabilities and medication-associated adverse effects. Novel treatment strategies need to be considered and surgical procedures to treat patients have been re-examined, aiding and encouraging improvements in neurosurgical techniques and brain imaging and developing microelectrode recording techniques, thus increasing the safety and accuracy of neurosurgical interventions. This volume examines neurosurgical procedures from the standpoint of their pathophysiological rationale, selection of patients that are candidates for surgery, a description of the technical aspects of surgery and what benefits and adverse effects can be anticipated. |

Atlas of pediatric orthopaedic Raymond T. Morrissy、 Stuart L. Weinstein The atlas is focused on providing the surgeon with the surgical technique as best as can be done in a book. Like all surgical techniques, the techniques discussed in the Atlas are best learned and practiced in the presence of a firm background in the decision-making process that leads to the surgery. In this edition, guest authors have been asked to work with the artist and editors to contribute a procedure in which they have special expertise. As in earlier editions, Gary Lourie contributed heavily to the section on the upper extremity. Paul Sponseller contributed the section on pelvic osteotomy for extrophy of the bladder and Tim Schrader and Michael Mills contributed the Ganz periacetabular osteotomy section. |
