The Electrodiagnosis
The Electrodiagnosis is a set of auxiliary diagnostic tools
using various electromagnetic techniques to evaluate neurological
or neuro-muscular function/dysfunction of the patients. These diagnostic
tools include:
- Needle electromyography (EMG)
- Nerve conduction study (NCS)
- Motor evoke potentials (MEP)
- Somatosensory evoke potentials (SSEP)
Patients with conditions such as bleeding tendency
(e.g. hemophilia or under anticoagulation therapy), immunocompromised status,
systemic infection, or valvular heart disease(including that post-valvular
replacement surgery) should be further evaluated before the test. After
needle electromyography examination, wounds from needle insertion might
cause some minor bleeding or ecchymosis, yet the condition is limited and
would recover after ice-packing and proper care. All the procedures are
performed by PM & R attending doctors or supervised residents. The
total examination process takes about a half to 2 hours, depending on the
patient¡¦s condition and test difference.
