Introduction
to the Social Service Department in Chang Gung
Memorial Hospital
Since Chung Gung Memorial Hospital was set up, it has aimed at achieving the goal—serving the patients wholeheartedly. In addition to working on the innovation and services of medical technology, Chung Gung also organized the Social Service Department on the basis of treating patients as a whole human being. With the assistance of professional social workers, patients could be taken good care of either psychologically or socially. What’s more, social workers would actively participate in the medical team, providing patients with relevant evaluation information to reduce the difficulties they encounter when they see a doctor. In general, missions of social work in the medical system are as follows:
1. Patients: Provide patients with relevant therapeutic information and help promote the relationship between doctors and patients to enhance the cure effect.
2. Relatives: Provide patients’ relatives with helpful social information to solve problems and release their tense emotions.
3. The Medical team: Provide the medical team with social and psychological evaluation data, offering suggestions to the medical team in terms of therapy and recuperation.
Mission for patients:
Provide patients and groups with services and tracking plans; collect relevant social resources to help patients get through the difficulties.
Mission in the community:
1. Develop the relationship between the hospital and the community so that the hospital could fully make use of social resources, such as recruiting volunteers.

Develop public hygiene in the community, applying the abundant medical resources
to the community. In so doing, both the hospital and the community would benefit
from it.
With the progress of the society, roles of medical social workers are changing. In the early time, social workers only worked for those who had financial difficulties. But after the National Health Insurance is practiced, social workers have begun to work on evaluating those who are most dangerous. From the viewpoint of early interference, their job can help prevent problems from happening. At present, the social service department provides services for the premature, cancer children, burn injuries, and suicides etc. Its services are extensive and penetrating. Meanwhile, it adopts relevant social resources to form a complete social service network. As for the group, besides holding activities for patients continuously, the social service department also actively evaluates the possibilities of establishing the self-help society. In the community, the fruity medical resources of Chung Gung can help develop the function of health protection, hold the circular medical service, and take care of the elderly who live alone. And with the services provided by the volunteers, Chung Gung eventually would build its image of tenderness and warmness.

The Social Service Department is an organization where professional social workers apply their specialties to casework, group work, and community work etc. By cooperating with volunteers to help people solve social, psychological, family, and economical problems that are related to disease, they attempt to promote the medical effect and develop the community service plan in hope of achieving the aim—care the society.

* Social work of the
emergency room
On the average, there were 382 patients every day in Chung Gang’s emergency room in 1999. Of these patients, many have social, psychological, and other problems except the medical problems. Under this condition, it is necessary for the medical team to provide services for patients. In the emergency room, there are social workers helping evaluate and deal with the problems of patients and their relatives, such as emotional problems, financial difficulties, home care, the problems of entering and leaving the hospital, difficulties of adapting to disease, suicide guidance, the organs donation resolution, and children and women protection etc.
* Community Service
Chung Gang Memorial Hospital is located in between two towns, Lin Kou and Guei Shan. The development and performance of Chung Gang are correlated with habitants’ lives in the two towns. Owing to this reason, Chung Gang naturally becomes a member in the community of Lin Kou and Guei Shan. As a result, the social service department devises many community service activities in hope of benefiting the community, caring the society, and developing hygiene health protection. In other words, Chung Gung always cares the locals’ matters as a local one.

They provide the preparation service for patients who are leaving the hospital. Through the community resources, they hope to help patients settle down so that patients would be taken good care of.
